Contributors’ Guidelines

At Sisterly HQ, we are always looking for pitches that tell the stories of Nigerian women through the lenses of any of our existing columns.

If you’d like to pitch to Sisterly HQ, please think of which column would be the best fit for your piece. Click here to see all the columns at Sisterly HQ.

We strongly encourage Nigerian women from different backgrounds, including underrepresented groups, to pitch to us.

What We Publish

Sisterly HQ is female-focused. Therefore, our pieces, interviews, and articles are female-focused, or female-inclusive.

We will only publish articles, pieces, and interviews that are original, and unplagiarized.

What We Will Not Publish

We will not publish any piece, interview, or article that perpetuates gender inequality, and gender stereotypes. We are unable to publish pieces that have been published in another publication.

We will not publish unoriginal, discriminatory, and plagiarized content that does not align with our guidelines.

What We Ask Of You

  • We ask that your pitch be respectful of different people’s identities, and beliefs.
  • We ask that your pitch does not disempower women, or perpetuate gender stereotypes and inequality.
  • We ask that your pitch reflects the originality of your piece, interview, or article.
  • We ask that you do not plagiarize anyone’s work.
  • We ask that your pitch be written in conversational English.
  • We ask that your pitch be 200 words maximum.

Here are some helpful resources on pitching to a publication: Masterclass, Masterclass, Harvard, Freelance Writing, Indeed, and Journo Resources.

Compensation

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any wages, salaries, benefits, or compensation of any kind to our contributors because we do not receive any funding.

Publishing Policy

Sisterly HQ will only publish articles, pieces, and interviews that have gone through our editing and review processes. We will only publish articles, pieces, and interviews that are aligned with our guidelines and values. If articles, pieces, and interviews are found to be plagiarized, or in violation of our guidelines, they will not be published. If they have been published, they will be removed and the writer will be notified.

How To Be A Contributor

Please, send the pitch of your article, piece, or interview to submissions@sisterlyhq.com. The pitch should be 200 words maximum.

Pitches should contain an introduction or summary, why the story is important, and a writing plan or structure. You can also tell us about yourself, and why you have chosen to write the piece, article, or interview. The pitch must contain the column that your piece or article fits into. Please note that submissions may be published anonymously if requested.

Before pitching, we advise that you look at our publication to see the articles, pieces, and interviews that we have published in the past.

Due to the volume of pitches received and our limited number of volunteers, we are unable to respond to every pitch and will only respond to the pitches that we accept.

If Your Pitch Is Accepted

We will contact you for a full-length article, piece, or interview with a stated deadline. We will also provide you with Sisterly HQ’s writing and editing guidelines. We will work with you, through one or two revisions until we are able to publish the article, piece, or interview. Please note that contributors would be fully credited for their work.
